301 new extra-solar planets to Kepler’s total count

Published on November 27, 2021Written by phys.org

Scientists recently added a whopping 301 newly validated exoplanets to the total exoplanet tally.

The throng of planets is the latest to join the 4,569 already validated planets orbiting a multitude of distant stars. How did scientists discover such a huge number of planets, seemingly all at once? The answer lies with a new deep neural network called ExoMiner.
Deep neural networks are machine learning methods that automatically learn a task when provided with enough data. ExoMiner is a new deep neural network that leverages NASA’s Supercomputer, Pleiades, and can distinguish real exoplanets from different types of imposters, or “false positives.” Its design is inspired by various tests and properties human experts use to confirm new exoplanets. And it learns by using past confirmed exoplanets and false positive cases.
ExoMiner supplements people who are pros at combing through data and deciphering what is and isn’t a planet. Specifically, data gathered by NASA’s Kepler spacecraft and K2, its follow-on mission. For missions like Kepler, with thousands of stars in its field of view, each holding the possibility to host multiple potential exoplanets, it’s a hugely time-consuming task to pore over massive datasets. ExoMiner solves this dilemma.
“Unlike other exoplanet-detecting machine learning programs, ExoMiner isn’t a black box—there is no mystery as to why it decides something is a planet or not,” said Jon Jenkins, exoplanet scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley. “We can easily explain which features in the data lead ExoMiner to reject or confirm a planet.”
What is the difference between a confirmed and validated exoplanet? A planet is “confirmed,” when different observation techniques reveal features that can only be explained by a planet. A planet is “validated” using statistics—meaning how likely or unlikely it is to be a planet based on the data.
In a paper published in the Astrophysical Journal, the team at Ames shows how ExoMiner discovered the 301 planets using data from the remaining set of possible planets—or candidates—in the Kepler Archive. All 301 machine-validated planets were originally detected by the Kepler Science Operations Center pipeline and promoted to planet candidate status by the Kepler Science Office. But until ExoMiner, no one was able to validate them as planets.
When a planet crosses directly between us and its star, we see the star dim slightly because the planet is blocking out a portion of the light. This is one method scientists use to find exoplanets. They make a plot called a light curve with the brightness of the star versus time. Using this plot, scientists can see what percentage of the star’s light the planet blocks and how long it takes the planet to cross the disk of the star.
The paper also demonstrates how ExoMiner is more precise and consistent in ruling out false positives and better able to reveal the genuine signatures of planets orbiting their parent stars—all while giving scientists the ability to see in detail what led ExoMiner to its conclusion.
“When ExoMiner says something is a planet, you can be sure it’s a planet,” added Hamed Valizadegan, ExoMiner project lead and machine learning manager with the Universities Space Research Association at Ames. “ExoMiner is highly accurate and in some ways more reliable than both existing machine classifiers and the human experts it’s meant to emulate because of the biases that come with human labeling.”
None of the newly confirmed planets are believed to be Earth-like or in the habitable zone of their parent stars. But they do share similar characteristics to the overall population of confirmed exoplanets in our galactic neighborhood.
“These 301 discoveries help us better understand planets and solar systems beyond our own, and what makes ours so unique,” said Jenkins.
As the search for more exoplanets continues—with missions using transit photometry such as NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS, and the European Space Agency’s upcoming PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars, or PLATO, mission—ExoMiner will have more opportunities to prove it’s up to the task.
“Now that we’ve trained ExoMiner using Kepler data, with a little fine-tuning, we can transfer that learning to other missions, including TESS, which we’re currently working on,” said Valizadegan. “There’s room to grow.”

Criminals Target California Home Depot For Crowbars And Sledgehammers!

The racial division comes from different leftists, with the MSM driving their story. The division led by the Left and supported by the mainstream media has provoked criminals to act more violently to the recent events.
More and more Dems cities and states have implemented no bail and changed felonies to misdemeanors; criminals feel forced to commit crimes. It is evident with the recent trend of gang-robberies, especially across California.

The looters work in large groups, and they use sledgehammers to break windows to enter the stores. One group of CA criminals took to Home Deport this Thanksgiving night to stock up on their looting supplies.
Precisely on Black Friday, in LA County, one group of looters from 15-20 ransacked a Home Depot store at approximately 8:30 pm.
Check this out:

In their gang style, the robes left the crime scene with vehicles that waited for them in front of the store.
Fox News reported that ten vehicles were pulled up outside the store.
In Lakewood, a group of suspects ages 15 to 20 stormed a Home Depot store around 8:30 p.m. and grabbed tools such as crowbars, mallets and sledgehammers before getting away in vehicles that were waiting outside, FOX 11 of Los Angeles reported.
One entire section of hammers was completely cleared out, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies told the station.
As many as 10 vehicles pulled up outside the store and the thieves donned ski masks before launching their spree, KCBS-TV of Los Angeles reported.
The theft prompted fears that the stolen tools would be used to commit more robberies at other stores in the area, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told the station.
The Lakewood incident remained under investigation, FOX 11 reported.
People say that CA Prop 47 that Newsom supported was guilty of the rise in retail theft. This prop 47 reclassified many crimes as misdemeanors instead of felonies!
The cutoff was $950 for these substantial lefts.

What the heck did they expect from Prop 47? Can’t these people connect the dots?”Ever since San Francisco officials passed Proposition 47, which lowered penalties for thefts under $950, there’s been a dramatic increase in shoplifting.”https://t.co/wicZy3Xvi5

During the past few years, criminals have been encouraged to participate in such thefts. For example, in 2018, the Public Policy Institute of California released a study showing Prop 47 contributed to a 9% rise in robberies.

NBC LA reported that four suspects from the Home Depot robbery were in custody. Police think that these people stole $400 in merchandise.
NBC LA has more on this story:
Four individuals, who police believe may be involved in the flash mob theft of at least $400 in merchandise from a Home Depot in the Lakewood Center Mall, were in custody Saturday after being arrested in Beverly Hills.
The police investigation is still ongoing, as police work to confirm whether the four individuals arrested were involved in Friday night’s incident.
Police received a call regarding several vehicles driving with no license plates near Beverly Drive and Dayton Way just after 9 p.m. Friday, Sgt. Jeff Newman of the Beverly Hills Police Department told City News Service.
Officers stopped one of the vehicles and took the suspects into custody.
“We’re currently working with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to see if there is a link to the Lakewood Home Depot incident or any other crimes that have been committed,” Newman said.
Approximately eight males entered the store at 7:46 p.m. Friday, walked directly to the tool aisle and stole various sledgehammers, crowbars and hammers valued at approximately $400, according to Deputy Miguel Meza of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
Cell phone video showed a group of teenagers leaving the store.
I think the Biden administration has to call out these blatant acts of domestic terrorism. Without the President condemning the violence, we are not getting anything except more violence.
We have to thank the Left for the rise in crime we have, hurting businesses and threatening public safety.
California no longer has control over these violent robberies, and the officials can’t stop them.

The Simple Arithmetic Of Wind Power

Published on November 27, 2021Written by Dr. Jay Lehr

Nations have spent hundreds of billions of dollars hoping to replace coal and natural gas to no avail. Australians and Germans have suffered from the government’s decisions the most.

They now have sky-high energy costs and frequent blackouts. Both are returning to coal with as little fanfare as possible.
Why is this true? The answer is the little-known and less well-understood Ciccone/Lehr electric power Rule of Thumb which states:

“All Solar and Wind Power on an Electric Grid Must Be Backed Up With an Equal or Greater Amount of Fossil Fuel Power Running on Standby 100 percent of The Time.”

Although, I will admit that Germany thinks they can manage with only 80 percent back up which one has to doubt as we have seen their electric costs triple.
Nonsensical as it may seem, President Biden’s plan for a climate-friendly electric grid depends on the ability to construct thousands of miles of power lines to bring energy from the wind and sun-rich states across the nation to replace all the electricity currently supplied by coal and natural gas.
As the sun sets in New York and the wind calms, California may be able to keep its lights on for a few more hours before all goes dark. Regardless, Biden wants to harness all the nation’s wind without even understanding that the landmass of the contiguous 48 states is not large enough to fit all the wind turbines required.
The cost of wind power can never be competitive with coal and natural gas, and their industry only exists due to huge government subsidies that keep wind and solar companies rich and the public poor.
While we should be opposing all money spent on the wind, the deck has been stacked against us by the wind power lobby. These lobbyists have convinced state legislatures to require electric utilities to obtain some of their power from the wind ‘supposedly.’ This legislation is called Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS). “Supposedly” is my keyword because, for every kilowatt-hour of wind power, the utility must build additional coal or natural gas power to fully back up the wind capacity they added to their system.
So the net gain to the utility is increased cost, not increased energy, which ends up on the monthly bill to its customers.
Let’s look at why this is so. As we know, the wind is consistently inconsistent or better described as intermittent. In a word, it is not reliable. No electric grid can afford to be unreliable. Our three electric grids, East, West, and Texas, all operate at 60 hertz of electric power. A hertz is a single electric cycle of alternating current per second. No grid can vary by more than half a hertz for any period, meaning 60.5 hertz or 59.5 hertz are its limits of variability.
Beyond these limits, the system will crash, which means all down the line equipment will shut off or, at times, may actually explode.
This has never happened before. If it did, the cost to society would be in the billions and the loss of life in the thousands. In February 2021, the Texas grid came within 5 minutes of crashing. The grid was only saved by unloading the huge power users from the system.
This is why all electric utilities sign agreements with large users giving them the right to pull the plug on them in times of emergency. An emergency is the loss of balance between the electric power generated and the electricity the system is demanding.
Let’s look at why wind is even more intermittent than you could imagine. Every turbine has a range of wind speeds, usually between 30 miles per hour (mph) and 55 mph, in which it will produce its maximum rated electric output. At slower speeds, the production falls off considerably.
Physics tells us that when you double wind speed, the power of the wind increases by a factor of 8 (that’s 2 cubed 2x2x2). Conversely, when the wind speed is halved, the wind turbine output power declines 8 fold.
Another poorly understood aspect of wind turbines is their size. Wind output is essentially limited by the land area used to harness it. You can have very large turbines with very long blades in small numbers, which will not interfere with each other. Or you can have smaller turbines in larger numbers and get the same kilowatt-hours of power from the land.
It should be obvious that turbines must be spaced at precise distances apart not to interfere with each turbine’s ability to capture the wind. Unfortunately, the country is moving toward bigger and bigger turbines that will make disposal of these giant blades nearly impossible.
To give a sense of scale, to replace the energy from one average natural gas power plant sitting on 4 acres of land would require 2500 acres of large wind turbines. Each turbine has a rated capacity of the number of Megawatts of electricity (commonly 2.5 megawatts) they could produce if they turned 24/7 at the most optimum revolutions per minute.
The wind industry projects the annual output of their turbines to be 30 to 40 percent of capacity. However, experience for the past decade indicates that annual outputs are more commonly between 15 and 30 percent. For example, when 137 US wind projects self-reported to the US Energy Agency in 2003, their average capacity was 26.9 percent. Nine years later it rose to 30.4 percent.
However, 27 European Union countries reported their efficiency in 2007 to be only 13 percent. The saddest reality is that wind turbines produce no power 70 percent of the time.
When the industry describes its total capacity, it adds up the plated capacity number of all existing turbines. This is really ridiculous. Having now burdened you with a variety of numbers relating to our 60,000 wind turbines across America.
But keep in mind as we debate how much a wind turbine can produce, my purpose for this 3 part tutorial is to convince all readers that all wind turbines add up to no contribution whatever to America’s electricity for its cost. This is a hard sell to make as it seems unreasonable to the average person.
But it is no different than blaming humans for the planet’s temperature while ignoring nature.

Psaki Dismisses The Price Of The Most Expensive Thanksgiving Ever

With food prices climbing to unprecedented levels, and severe supply chain troubles, food banks across the United States are struggling to feed families. Many Americans are frustrated with the soaring costs of food, but for families who already experience “food insecurity,” increased uncertainty is making their lives even more stressful.

AP News reports, “Supply chain disruptions, lower inventory and labor shortages have all contributed to increased costs for charities on which tens of millions of people in the U.S. rely on for nutrition. Donated food is more expensive to move because transportation costs are up, and bottlenecks at factories and ports make it difficult to get goods of all kinds.”
According to the chief operating officer of the nonprofit Feeding America, Katie Fitzgerald, food banks expanded in response to the increased demands that resulted from the pandemic. Some food banks are making substitutions or stocking smaller sizes of food products such as canned goods.

TRENDINGReport: ‘At Least 160,000 Illegal Immigrants’ Have Been Released Into U.S. Since March
The Alameda County Community Food Bank in Oakland from the San Francisco Bay Area is reportedly spending an additional $60,000 a month on food costs, and $1 million a month to distribute 4.5 million pounds of food. Before the pandemic, however, they were spending just a quarter of that price for 2.5 million pounds of food. Oakland food bank’s Director of Community Engagement, Michael Altfest, explained that “the cost of canned green beans and peaches is up nearly 9% for them; [canned] tuna and frozen tilapia up more than 6%; and a case of 5-pound frozen chickens for holiday tables is up 13%. The price for dry oatmeal has climbed 17%.”
In Colorado Springs, at the Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado, CEO Lynne Telford shares the staggering statistic that the cost of a truckload of peanut butter is up 80% from two years ago, mac and cheese is up 19% from one year ago, and ground beef went up 5% in just three months.

The vice president of sales for Transnational Foods Inc., Bryan Nichols, shared that “[an] average container coming from Asia prior to COVID would cost about $4,000. Today, that same container is about $18,000.”
“It’s unclear to what extent other concurrent government aid, including an expanded free school lunch program in California and an increase in benefits for people in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, will offset rising food prices. An analysis by the Urban Institute think tank in Washington, D.C. found that while most households are expected to receive sufficient maximum benefits for groceries, a gap still exists in 21 percent of U.S. rural and urban counties,” according to AP News.
Families across the country are worried about being able to put food on the table on any given day, let alone the upcoming holidays. According to Feeding America, “42 million people may face hunger in the U.S. — including more than 13 million children.” They add, “Hunger knows no boundaries — it touches every community in the U.S., including your own.”

Biden Energy Secretary Subject of Ethics Complaint for Promoting Electric Company She Held $1.6 Million in Stock

President Biden’s Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm has received an ethics complaint for promoting an electric bus company she sat on the board of and held over a million dollars of stock in. She did so all while being a part of the executive branch in Biden’s administration.

Breitbart reports Granholm, “who oversees moving the country toward an electric vehicle transportation system and enjoys newfound powers after the passage of Biden’s infrastructure package — is facing scrutiny for promoting Proterra, a Burlingame, California-based electric bus company she sat on the board of and held 240,520 shares of stock in, which garnered her $1.6 million when she finally divested them 157 days after her nomination.”
Critics say Granholm has promoted Proterra in her official capacity as energy secretary and for hyping grant access to companies with connections to Proterra. Additionally, they say Granholm’s promotion of Proterra has increased its visibility and therefore the value of her stock before she was required to sell her shares due to ethics rules.

TRENDINGBiden Admin Again Pushes For End Of ‘Remain In Mexico’ Policy
As of Monday, the company had a market cap of $2.6 billion. Granholm also promoted Burlingame, a California electric vehicle company, at the same time “Democrats in Congress were crafting – and ultimately passing – Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure package, which dramatically increases Granholm’s authority as energy secretary to advance private sector companies in the transition to an electric vehicle-based transportation infrastructure” reports Breitbart.
The infrastructure package “grants as much as $174 billion to green vehicles and $456 billion to zero-emission buses to ‘replace 50,000 diesel transit vehicles and electrify at least 20 percent of our yellow school bus fleet’ and ‘to build a national network of 500,000 EV chargers by 2030.”

Breitbart reports:
Granholm’s involvement with Proterra started in March of 2017 when the company announced she would be joining its board ostensibly due to her experience with the automotive sector when she served as Michigan’s governor from 2003 to 2011. Proterra hoped to use Granholm’s “track record for producing a high-quality clean energy and transportation workforce in the Midwest” to launch the company into the “next phase of strategic growth and national deployment,” its press release explained. During her time on the board, Granholm supplemented her considerable income by simultaneously serving on the boards and consulting for various left-wing organizations as well, such as American Bridge PAC and Media Matters.

21 Republican Reps Support Transgender To Be A Fed Protected Class!

Many reports claim that 21 House Republicans support the transgender activist group to make sexual orientation and gender identity a federally protected class.
But, the controversies in the last years about the transgender movement and the House Republicans are giving more power to this ideology.
Join The True Defender Telegram Chanel Here: https://t.me/TheTrueDefender
Rep. Chris Stewart of Utah sponsored the FFAA in 2019, an all-Republican bill that would make sexual orientation and gender identity a fed-protected class in exchange for a particular right to discriminat3e carve-outs for dissident religious organizations.
These are the Republicans who supported transgender to be a federally protected class:

Fred Upton (Mich.)
Elise Stefanik (N.Y.)
John Curtis (Utah)
Mark Amodei (Nev.)
Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.)
Adam Kinzinger (Ill.)
Andrew Garbarino (N.Y.)
Blake Moore (Utah)
Burgess Owens (Utah)
Carlos Gimenez (Fla.)
Chris Jacobs (N.Y.)
Claudia Tenney (N.Y.)
Jeff Van Drew (N.J.)
Jenniffer González-Colón (P.R.)
Maria Salazar (Fla.)
Mario Díaz-Balart (Fla.)
Mike Simpson (Idaho)
Nicole Malliotakis (N.Y.)
Steve Stivers (Ohio)
Tom Reed (N.Y.)

When the Republicans revived FFAA, supporters stated that it achieved a compromise among religious liberty and established LGBT Americans; anti-discrimination protection.

Right supporters say that the measure represents a conservative alternative to the Equality Act, another more extreme Dems initiative that makes sexual orientation and gender identity a US civil-rights law without any religious-liberty safeguards that the FFAA provides.
Many problems appeared linked to lending any legitimacy to the gender identity crowd. One problem is that Republicans should not be giving a proverbial inch to.
For example, the state law in California, SB 132, allows men who feel like women to be in women’s prison.
It was a shock to see that a female inmate would become pregnant very shortly after the implementation of the practice in California.
The incident that garnered national attention out of Loudoun Country, Virginia, where the father of the raped girl was arrested because he said that a boy wearing a skirt raped her daughter, is one example of the problems emerging from this decision.
