Major teachers union president says union ‘is all in’ for schools nationwide to reopen

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten is now saying “Schools must be open.” Weingarten gave a speech at AFT headquarters Thursday to call students back to in-person learning.

“There is no doubt: Schools must be open. In person. Five days a week. With the space and facilities to do so,” Weingarten said. “We know that’s how kids learn best and that prolonged isolation is harmful.”

Weingarten also launched a $5 million campaign “to communicate the importance of in-school learning and build families’ trust and confidence in children returning to school.” The campaign is called “Back-to-School for Everyone.” This comes after President Biden has also executed a billion-dollar plan to help schools.

“The United States will not be fully back until we are fully back in school. And my union is all in,” Weingarten said.
