Guatemalan President says Biden’s messaging is contributing to the BORDER CRISIS

Guatemalan President Alejandro Giamattei claimed in an interview that the Biden administration’s messaging has been encouraging the border crisis. CBSN correspondent Ed O’Keefe sat down with the president over the weekend.

“The message changed to ‘we’re going to reunite families and we’re going to reunite children,’” Giamattei told O’Keefe. “The very next day the coyotes were here organizing groups of children to take them to the United States.”

But, Giamattei says it’s up to Harris to help the ongoing border crisis. “In our zoom meeting on May 7th, we made a proposal to the Vice President. We asked her to introduce a bill in the United States Senate that would make human smuggling and asking as a coyote a federal crime,” Giamattei said. Meanwhile, in Guatemala coyotes’ punishment tend to be a 5-6 year prison sentence. “It’s a joke,” the president said.

Biden administration officials would not confirm to O’Keefe whether they were considering the proposal or not. Vice President Harris landed in Guatemala Monday to meet with President Giamattei.
