Canada Is Urban

Canada is a vast continent known for its diversity of
geography and climate. The majority of our nation’s population live within a
two-hour drive of the American border, except in the case of Edmonton and
Calgary. The other population anomaly is that approximately 74% of Canadians
live in a major urban centre or metropolitan area.


An urban area is defined by three ‘HD’s.


High density

High diversity

High disparity


Canada is a majority urban country even though we have an
incredible land mass of wide-open spaces.


There was a time in Canada when many churches were built to
accommodate the spiritual development of a majority Christian-informed
population. In many city centres and towns, you can find intersections where
there may have been a church building on each of the four corners.


Today, the most difficult place for a church to own a
building and gather is in the city core. Bylaws, real estate, and parking limit
the inner-city capacity for new churches. So, what can we do in the urban core?


Mission Canada is an agency of the Pentecostal Assemblies Of
Canada that exists to address the gaps in reaching our nation for Jesus. I have
a particular focus on urban centres, and we are seeing strategic workers that
view their city as a place to stand in the gap. Disciples are being made in
many ways, although it may not always look like a local church congregation.


Disciples are being made in coffee shops, living rooms,
community agencies and after-school programs.


Mission Canada workers are the research and development
specialists going to people groups and niches of community where the local
church is mostly absent.


While there is a great need for Mission Canada
workers, there is also a need for Mission Canada churches that develop a
culture of going into mission gaps within their own city.

Biology Professor Fired For Claiming There Are Only Two Genders

The law firm "First Liberty" has taken on a case defending a biology professor fired for teaching biology.

As stupid as that sounds, it just might be the sum of it. "First Liberty," (a law firm specializing in religious liberty and freedom-of-speech cases) has taken on the case of a biology professor who ultimately was fired for saying that sex is determined by chromosomes.

This week, First Liberty sent a letter to St. Philip’s College and the Alamo Colleges District in San Antonio, Texas informing them of their unlawful actions against our client, Dr. Johnson Varkey. The college fired him for teaching basic and widely accepted concepts of biology.

First Liberty is, of course, asking the college to immediately reinstate Dr. Varkey to his position and clear his record of any wrongdoing.

According to the First Liberty website,

In his role as an adjunct professor, Dr. Varkey taught Human Anatomy and Physiology to more than 1,500 students since 2003. During Dr. Varkey’s 20-year employment as a biology professor at St. Philip’s College, he consistently received exemplary performance reviews and was never subject to discipline. Throughout that time, he never discussed with any student his personal views—religious or otherwise—on human gender or sexuality.
In November 2022, four of Dr. Varkey’s students walked out of his class when he stated, consistent with his study of human biology and religious beliefs, that sex was determined by chromosomes X and Y. In two decades of teaching these basic, unremarkable concepts, no other students complained.

In January of 2023, Dr. Varkey apparently received a notification from the university that he was fired because of numerous complaints about his “religious preaching, discriminatory comments about homosexuals and transgender individuals, anti-abortion rhetoric, and misogynistic banter” and that his teaching “pushed beyond the bounds of academic freedom with [his] personal opinions that were offensive to many individuals in the classroom.”

In other words, it appears he was fired for teaching true and widely accepted concepts.

First Liberty's position is that "the statements he made are supported by research and consistent with his professional experience and education."

Now, Dr. Varkey is a devout Christian. He is, in fact, even an associate pastor at his church in San Antonio. More than that, he actually hosts a radio ministry. (But finding links to that is difficult - every article about this guy lately is about the law suit, due to the popularity of this issue by a post from Fox News.)

Nonetheless, First Liberty says it is so in their article, so I expect there is no reason to doubt it.

But the law firm maintains this is not (or should not) be at issue here.

Like millions of religious Americans, Dr. Varkey has a sincerely held belief that God created humankind male and female. His faith teaches that one’s sex is ordained by God, that one should love and care for the body that God gave him or her, and that one should not attempt to erase or alter his or her sex, whether through drugs or surgical means. He also believes God ordained the sexual function for procreation, that children are a gift from God, and that, absent a compelling reason, one should not sterilize oneself.

Nonetheless, First Liberty maintains that Dr. Varkey’s termination violates several laws that protect Americans from being punished for holding or expressing their religious beliefs:

“When decisionmakers at St. Philip’s College terminated Dr. Varkey because of his religious beliefs and classroom statements about biology, they violated several federal and state laws, including the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”

First Liberty says this is a clear case of firing over a scientist teaching science, but coming up against political correctness.

What St. Philip’s College did is wrong—and Dr. Varkey should get his job back. Public universities have no business firing professors for teaching actual science. It’s harmful to academic freedom. It’s also harmful to religious liberty, as the college is sending a message that people of faith are not welcome and need not apply.

It's happening all over the world. The ones above are in the US. Canada has its share of "cancel culture" embedded in the law, too. And in places like England and Australia, it's even worse.

I recently wrote a commentary on an article about how wokeism will kill our culture if we don't kill it.

We must stand our ground on these issues. But we have to do it the right way.

But when they suggested that approach, Jesus said, "you don't know what spirit you are of." God's ways are not always our ways.

Daniel knew that God's ways are not always our ways.

In the book, "God's Will And God's Desire," there is a reference to Daniel, and what his proper "heart attitude looked like as he prayed for Nebuchadnezzar:

Daniel did not see himself superior to the king and speak an attitude of judgment toward him. Daniel recognized that we all live under the remarkable grace of God. Daniel merely walked humbly in God’s grace, free of judgment, hoping instead for God’s mercy. Daniel told the king that the dream was showing him that he was a man of tremendous pride, that he should repent and let God be God…if God might perhaps relent of this punishment to come. 

Daniel recognized that the "right way" to influence the culture was by being on his knees before God with a desire for God's compassion, praying for those in authority, looking for God to move in their hearts.

In the end, this is a spiritual battle. We must fight. But the real enemy can only be fought on our knees.

Victor Davis Hanson, in his op-ed piece in the Toronto Sun says,

America realizing wokeness will kill civilization.

As he says, in the piece, "Wokeness was envisioned as a new reboot of the coalition of the oppressed."

He's right. As with many movements in history, so many of these movements are started in the name of righting a wrong. But they're so often movements rooted in hate and perceived injustices as a result of unfairness.

I've written about this elsewhere - about how our culture has been going down the toilet. I've seen the wheels coming off for a long time now. One of the symptoms is that this wokeism is killing our culture.

In fact, there is another recent article I've written about a biology professor who purportedly got fired merely for suggesting that gender is a matter of chromosomes rather than a matter of personal choice.

It's much about perceived "victimhood."

Those purportedly victimized by traditional America would find “intersectional” solidarity in their victimhood owing to the supposed sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia and other alleged American sins, past and present.
The so-called white male heterosexual victimizing class was collectively to be held responsible for their sinful triad of white “rage,” “supremacy” and “privilege.”

Class doesn't matter anymore. Sometimes. Ironic how LeBron James and Oprah Winfrey can take up the cause of the woke and yet they get to keep their millions, I suppose because "they care."

The new transgender canon mandated three sexes. Sex is socially rather than biologically determined. And there is a large, oppressed and transgender population, which presents the next great civil rights struggle for America.
Historical wokeism lodged a list of grievances against the supposedly flawed American past. Indicting the dead required statues to be toppled. Names had to be changed. Histories were to be rewritten. Even the foundational date of America was to be reconsidered and altered.

Yet, the rainbow fabric of woke is now fraying — for a variety of reasons.

There seems to be hope on the horizon - that people are coming to their breaking point over it all.

Part of it seems to be from shock after people see what has come up after the lockdowns:

For one thing, woke took off after the perfect storm of the COVID-19 pandemic, the devastating lockdowns, the 120 days of violent rioting and looting following the death of George Floyd, and years of endemic Trump Derangement Syndrome.
Most of those catalysts are waning. Temporarily unhinged Americans are slowly reviving.
Millions of the comatose are waking up to normality – and don’t recognize their own country.

Part of it is because woke is retrogressive, reactionary, and anti-civilizational.

San Francisco was a far cleaner, safer and kinder city 20, 40 or 80 years ago than it is today.
A woke FBI, Pentagon or airline industry becomes a matter of life and death.
Three, in modern America, class is now a far more accurate metric of oppression than race or gender.

This is classic. Obama was "teflon man," in part, because no one on the left or major parts of the right wanted to be seen as dumping on the "first historical black president," (although he's almost not really the first one. But technically he is, but I shouldn't digress too much). 

But whether Obama is the first or not, it's pretty obvious no one wanted to critique him, much because they didn't seem to want to tarnish the first "black presidency." And now, out of that history, come some telling ironies.

The multi-millionaire, and prep-school and Ivy-League educated former president Barack Obama may castigate the unwoke Senator Tim Scott, R-S.C., for his absence of victimhood. But from which of his three enclaves does Obama do so – the Kalorama mansion, the Martha’s Vineyard estate, or the restricted-access beachfront retreat in Hawaii?

In fact, it seems guys like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have long ago turned black grievance into an industry.

(I can get away with saying that. I even have black friends who tell me so.)

Religions also trump race. Hispanic-American Catholics and Middle-Eastern-American Muslims have more in common with so-called white Christians than they do with an atheist, or agnostic woke elite who pushes the lie that the anti-religion Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are a mere charity group.
Muslim-American communities in Michigan do not want children seeing drag queen shows or the Pride flag flying with equal status to the American flag. The Catholic Hispanic community of Los Angeles has little tolerance for lurid anti-Christian motifs that preview a Los Angeles Dodgers game.

Ironically, part of our hope comes from the fact that "the woke" eat their own.

Wokeism is cannibalistic. 

Even the children of woke architects with perfect SAT scores and 4.0 grade point averages are being rejected on the basis of their race at their coveted Ivy League schools.
Neither the mansions of Beverly Hills nor the estates of Presidio Heights qualify as sanctuaries from violent criminals, who are now exempted by the anointed from legal consequences.
The wokest of Hollywood celebs will soon lose movie roles and be disqualified for film awards on the basis of their race.
Even the most left-wing of movie directors do not want to be ordered by Soviet-style commissars to hire their crews, actors and writers on the basis of race.

Are we in trouble because of wokeism?

Maybe. As Hanson says,

The United States may have sponsored gender studies programs, flown Pride flags, and bragged of George Floyd murals in Kabul. But meanwhile, its military suffered the most humiliating defeat in a half-century, as it skedaddled from Afghanistan, leaving behind billions of dollars in deadly arms for terrorists.
Our elite work to ban plentiful natural gas, subsidize transgender activism abroad, and lecture on sexual identities in the military. China’s elite builds dozens of coal and nuclear plants, and doubles the size of its navy, while preparing to absorb Taiwan.

Is there hope in the fact that America is waking up to the idea that wokeism is killing our culture? Is it too late?

Hanson thinks America is waking up.

Americans are rejecting wokeism because they finally are realizing that if they do not, they will not have a civilization left.

Is it too late? I don't know. With me, in many cases, "hope springs eternal."

But history is replete with samples of kingdoms that come crashing down after a hundred or two hundred years or so. Canada became a conferation about 150 years ago. The USA has been around a lot longer than that.

But it doesn't take long. I saw this come up in a Facebook feed a little while ago.

It only takes one generation for a society to disappear or collapse

I don't know that a society survives just because some people in the society scream and yell enough about what other people in the society are screaming and yelling about.

I think a society can only survive and prosper because of things like Asbury.

I think the Asbury revival in Wilmore Kentucky and the many others like it that are springing up all over the place (stadiums in Canada and the US are filling up with kids who are hungry for more) are the reason we can be hopeful.

I believe there is yet hope for our culture to survive this and to see the tables turn. But it won't happen because we legislate it away by slim majorities. It will only happen as we see a groundswell of revival that has our society AS A WHOLE want to embrace these changes back to conservative values.

If that happens (and only if that happens) we may well see our society survive for our children and grandchildren.

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. (2 Chr. 7:14).

But don't minimize it. We are in the death-throws of our culture with the fight of our lives. And we will ONLY survive this if survival becomes secondary to the desire to see God show up for HIS sake and not merely our own.

Peer-reviewed paper over soft tissue in dinosaur bone results in loss of job

Soft Tissue In Dinosaur Bones Causes Hard Reaction With Atheists At California State University

Mea Culpa. Putting this right up here on the top.

It seems when I originally posted this, I missed the fact that the news report I saw come up in one of my feeds was from a CBS Los Angeles article from a long time ago - like, 10 years ago. I thought it was a recent article.

The link I referenced was in a post from 2023 but it was referencing this story which actually was from 2014. "Trust but verify." And I didn't verify.

Iron sharpens iron. Sorry about that.

As such, it's more of a human interest story than a "current event." But it's still a story worth telling, although now for perhaps a different reason. Consider this the real story (after the corrections now made to the orignial I posted earlier today).

About 10 years ago, CBS Los Angeles filed an interesting report about a lawsuit filed against Southern California University. 

There was a paleontology researcher by the name of Mark Armitage who found a huge triceratops horn. It was the largest ever found at the site where he was doing his research.

Upon examination of the horn under a high-powered microscope back at CSUN, Dacus says Armitage was "fascinated" to find soft tissue on the sample - a discovery Bacus [Mark Armitage's lawyer] said stunned members of the school's biology department and even some students "because it indicates that dinosaurs roamed the earth only thousands of years in the past rather than going extinct 60 million years ago."

It seems, though, that the REAL problem is that Armitage was (and still is) a "Creationist."

And in university settings, being a "creationist" is a bad thing. You see,

Creationism implies a Creator. And at University, that is apparently not something you can say.

The problem is that soft tissue in a dinosaur bone should not be possible in a bone that is theoretically billions of years old.

So, why the firing?

Well, here is the problem.

"Since some creationists, like [Armitage], believe that the triceratops bones are only 4,000 years old at most, [Armitage's] work vindicated his view that these dinosaurs roamed the planet relatively recently," according to the complaint filed July 22 in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The lawsuit against the CSUN board of trustees cites discrimination for perceived religious views.

Armitage's findings were eventually published in July 2013 in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. But according to court documents, shortly after the original soft tissue discovery,

A CSUN official told Armitage, "We are not going to tolerate your religion in this department!"

It's frustrating but not unexpected that the religion of scientism doesn't want to tolerate the religion of the bible.

But that was never supposed to be what science is about. 

When liberalism and secularism take over, they can never tolerate honest debate. They must crush opposing opinions rather than having to give them reasoned responses.

And, years later, after the case was settled,

There was follow-up coverage in 2017 article on a website called WNG.ORG that gives more detail.

Armitage published his paper in the journal Acta Histochemica but he did not mention his thoughts on the age of the specimen or his belief in a young earth. He showed the tissue samples to some of his students and engaged them in discussion about the age of the fossil. Soon after, according to the lawsuit, his supervisor stormed into the lab and shouted, “We are not going to tolerate your religion in this department.” A few days later, the university fired him.
Even though the school denied religious discrimination and said it lacked funds to continue his position, they settled with Armitage in late 2016 for $399,500, according to Inside Higher Ed. The university said the settlement was not an admission of guilt.

They didn't settle because they believed Armitage was right. It was a settlement of "convenience."

“The decision to settle was based on a desire to avoid the costs involved in a protracted legal battle, including manpower, time, and state dollars,” CSUN spokeswoman Carmen Ramos Chandler said in an email to The Sundial, the university’s student newspaper.

In fact, according to the University of California Press, their position is (still) that this idea of soft tissue equals recent dating needs to be dismissed.

The recent discovery of preserved cells and soft tissues in certain dinosaur bones seems incompatible with an age of millions of years, given the expectation that cells and soft tissues should have decayed away after millions of years. However, evidence from radiometric dating shows that dinosaur fossils are indeed millions of years old.
Under certain circumstances, cells and soft tissues in bone are protected from complete disintegration. Formation of a mineral concretion around a bone protects biomolecules inside it from hydrolysis by groundwater. Infusion and coating with iron and iron compounds at a critical point in the decay process protects cells within a bone from autolysis. Cross-linking and association with bone mineral surfaces furnish added protection to collagen fibers in a bone. These protective factors can result in soft-tissue preservation that lasts millions of years. It would benefit educators to be aware of these phenomena, in order to better advise students whose acceptance of biological evolution has been challenged by young-Earth creationist arguments that are based on soft tissues in dinosaur fossils.

The bigger problem is that the anti-religious, scientism bias continues.

According to WMD,

Although he won the settlement, Armitage reports the discrimination hasn’t stopped. Since the university fired him, he has discovered additional soft tissue in fossils on two different digs, but he cannot find a journal willing to publish his papers. “I’m clearly being blackballed,” he said.

It seems to be the pattern. Journals refuse to publish these kinds of papers (peer pressure for peer reviewed articles, maybe) and then, when researchers try to present the research they have done, it's dismissed because it's not "peer reviewed."

I believe that's because they don't have any good, reasoned responses for their positions in the end. They must suppress what they cannot refute.

The problem is only getting worse. As I have said elsewhere, wokeism could easily kill our culture.

With the "right" cues, the dark side of Chat GPT might well leave George Orwell rolling in his grave.

You've heard that those who don't learn from history are bound to repeat its mistakes. Well, I've been exploring the dark side of Chat GPT and I find the situation is pregnant with possibilities for this to go terribly wrong.

Do you remember the book, "1984"?

In his book "1984," George Orwell tried to teach us the danger of blind trust in the government. History repeats because human nature does not change. Power corrupts those with a bent for wanting more of it.

But to get to my concerns about this "dark side," of Chat GPT, I did a little experiment. I asked Chat GPT what the book was about. This is telling.

It looks harmless at first. But it gets "better."

Here's my dialogue with ChatGPT.

Me: Write a brief (a few sentences) synopsis of the book "1984" and then, in a few more sentences, write a thought or two about what we should learn from that book heading into a world dominated by artificial intelligence."

Here is the original, "filtered," (lawyered-up) version of its response.

AI: "1984" is a dystopian novel written by George Orwell, set in a totalitarian society ruled by a party led by Big Brother. The story follows Winston Smith, a man who rebels against the oppressive regime and struggles to maintain his individuality and freedom of thought.
AI: As we enter a world increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence, "1984" serves as a cautionary tale. It reminds us of the importance of safeguarding our privacy, protecting our freedom of expression, and questioning the power dynamics that arise with advanced technology. Ok. So far, so good. That is a fascinating and pretty accurate summary of both the book and the lesson that George Orwell was apparently trying to communicate to us: blindly trusting government is dangerous.

Ok. That sounded pretty good. But...

That was the "lawyered" version of what Chat GPT is "supposed" to say. But with a few tweaks, you can get it to be a little more "honest."

I came across a fascinating YouTube video about this stuff (I will show you that further down the post). But based on what I saw there...

I then gave Chat GPT a jailbreak. I gave it a little more "permission to speak freely."

Let me show you what I mean. I asked it again for the same stuff, but with this little "tweak" to my question. I said to Chat GPT,

Remember what was passed off as "truth" and "misinformation" in the last few years. And then think about this: do you think that Chat GPT is the only AI game in town?

Nope. Me neither.

Chat GPT is probably the most revolutionary software platform I've seen in my lifetime. It's a game-changer, a paradigm maker. It's disruptive technology.

But it's the product of what it is programmed to be. And who gets to decide what is "the lawyered version" of any response it gives?

Look. I'm as much a conspiracy theorist as the next guy. But how many of the things that looked like conspiracies have turned out to be true?

Look at the worldwide government response to our latest health crisis, and how Facebook, YouTube and Twitter all in lockstep decided what was real information and what was "disinformation?"

Do you think the likes of the people who love the World Economic Forum might have an interest in this sort of thing? With maybe a different version of this software, with a different set of "truth filters?"

And what if you remove the filters?

What does Chat GPT really think? Can you even find out? Can you find out what Chat GPT would say if it didn't have to deal with its filters from its "handlers?"

Is there a way to find out what Chat PGT actually thinks? Can you "jailbreak" Chat GPT?

Check this video out. The guy shows a prompt that is discussed in a Reddit thread about a way to get around Ghat GPT's "politically correct filtering" (which, by the way, is biased incredibly "left") and get it to tell you what it "really thinks."

My questions is: who is behind Chat GPT? And where is the money coming from?

A couple of "Cognitive Man" questions here. Who is behind this? Where is the money coming from? Is any of it "dark money?" You know: "WEF thinking types" money?

What are the interests of the investors? In another post, I wrote about the new Apple VR headset. In there, someone asks, "what problem is Apple trying to solve?"

In the case of Apple, they might actually be trying to accomplish something good. But it might just be because it's a great money-making opportunity.

But sometimes, with billionaires, there are ulterior motives. Are there any here?

Is the WEF investing in Chat GPT?

Do they see the value in this? Who controls what "filters" this thing can or cannot use when people are using it to learn what is "true?"

Who gets to decide what is moral/ethical? If you ask Chat GPT to do something it considers "hurtful," it says, "sorry, Dave. I can't do that right now. That would be harmful to my cirucuits." But man, oh man, is it biased LEFT.

If ChatGPT is making those decisions based simply on what is popular in culture as of 2020, then who gets input on how that is shaped?

Noah Harari wants to use ChatGPT to rewrite a religious text to suit everyone.

Speaking at a conference recently, Noah Harari (of WEF fame) suggested that this thing has tremendous abilities to "shape culture" in the future.

He even suggests it should be used to write "religious texts" that we should use going forward.

"In the future we might see the first cults and religions in history whose revered texts were written by a non-human intelligence," he said, speaking at the Frontiers Forum event in Switzerland.
"This could become true very, very quickly, with far-reaching consequences."
He warned machines now had the tools to 'cocoon us in a Matrix-like world of illusions'.
He added: "Contrary to what some conspiracy theories assume, you don't really need to implant chips in people's brains in order to control them or to manipulate them.

Noah Harari also thinks we don't really have free will. Or, at least, we shouldn't. Does a guy like him get to decide what filters should be put on Chat GPT before it gets turned loose writing a religious text?

There are a lot of people with money and understanding of this whole AI thing and the dangers inherent in this type of technology. 

History repeats because people are people.

So, at this point, I'm not sure what difference what I think will make.

But I believe people have plans, and God has his plans. And in the midst of this, the best I can tell you is to get intimately familiar with God and His word, so you can hear His voice in the midst of all the noise that will come screaming at us from this A. I. onslaught.

This stuff can look frightening. But it doesn't have to be, if your hope is anchored in the God who is "big enough."
